I was able to boot with the following kernel commandline (two of the options, fb= and BOOT_DEBUG= I got from one or the other of the older installers):
I also chose the 1600x1200x32 video mode. This still caused graphic corruption on the boot screen (loading kernel progress bar), but only minor corruption on the ubuntu logo progress/activity bar that appears immediately afterwards (The bar leaves a smidgeon of itself on the left side when it first bounces off of it.)
