Here is a patch that fixes the problem of only asking for the password one time.

One thing remaining where I currently do not know where its coming from (or if its related to that script):

Booting ends with a blank screen. Then I presh a key, then see the console login prompt, then can press Alt+F7 to switch to kdm/gdm.
