for the cups-pdf device driver, try using Generic -> PostScript Printer as opposed to Generic -> postscript color printer (rev3) as is recommended by the package docs.
after you have that driver setup, go into Properties -> Advanced and set GhostScript pre-filtering to something. in my case, any pre-filtering option produces readable output but I personally use Convert to PS level 2.
