I can confirm this bug with output:

david@sun:~$ gphoto2 --auto-detect

Canon Digital IXUS 900Ti (PTP mode) usb:

But digikam can't detect the kamera and the list is empty. (I'm on a feisty system that was upgraded to gutsy)
