Yes, I use java from SUN setting the JAVA_HOME environment variable.

However, after installing the packages you proposed:
claudio@sydney:~$ eclipse -vm /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-gcj-4.1-1.4.2.0/bin/java

eclipse runs fine and mysteriously eclipse exists fine now (see bug https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/eclipse/+bug/68714 )
