Subject: Error while Refreshing folder: Summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync

Package: evolution
Version: 2.4.2.1-1
Severity: grave

Yesterday when I did my daily upgrade, I got the new evolution 2.4 package.
When I started to start it, it froze.
(See #347672: evolution: Evolution 2.4.2.1 freezes on startup)

I did not have the time to debug it, so I just downgraded to the testing version
(2.2.something), and then the problem was over.

Today I decided to give it another try. I upgraded again.
This time it did not freeze, but gave this error:

"Error while Refreshing folder:
Summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync."

In the list of mail, each one seems to be duplicated.
If I click on one, it says

"Unable to retrieve message
Summary and folder mismatch, even after a sync."

... so it's still unusable.

I guess I will have do downgrade again...

This is still in 2.6.0. Although it doesn't freeze, I now have 1008 unread mails, and counting. It seems that each time the message appears, emails have been duplicated. Moving Inbox.ev-summary out of the way doesn't help.

I use fetchmail and postfix, and have pointed Evolution to the local mail spool. Maybe that has something to do with it.

evolution --offline stops evolution from trying to sync and is very useful to remove the duplicates.

Close evolution, remove .evolution/mail/local/*summary and restart evo. That fixes it.

Paul, they don't have a patch but a theory and a workaround, how does that change the priority?

I just changed it back to what it was after I found out about the
workaround. Feel free to change it again if you like.

This appears to be:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=213072

Also, the procedure to reliably workaround this bug is:
1. put evolution in offline mode (File/Work Offline)
2. close evolution
3. open a terminal and run:
      evolution --force-shutdown
      find ~/.evolution/mail/local -name "*ev-summary" -exec rm -f {} \;
4. start evolution
5. wait several seconds (until the status bar at the bottom is empty)
6. close evolution (it may take a long time to close)
7. Start evolution
8. Enable online mode (File/Work Online)

If you start evolution in Online mode after removing the summary files, then you may end up with duplicates and/or more folder mismatch errors. If you don't do 'evolution --force-shutdown', then you may also end up with more folder mismatch errors.

There seems to be some discussion of this getting fixed here:

I am afflicted by this bug several times a week, and the workaround is no help for me.

"Several seconds" - ha! I have very large folders - after removing the summary and restarting it takes 30-60 minutes to regenerate the indexes and summaries. During this time I cannot receive any mail - it just sits and spins "Storing folder...", and eventually the progress bar stops or Evolution crashes.

The only solution is to move the mbox files out of the way, restart Evo, and manually re-import them.

Is anyone working on the root cause of this bug - aka preventing the summary from getting corrupted in the first place?
