Same problem here. This is absolutely fundamental to my day job, and is something I took for granted.
As an aside, File Roller is great for detecting and opening all sorts of files even if they don't have a logical (i.e. a known archive format) extension. It seems this functionality has been sadly lost.
Definitely a regression which needs fixing asap, as Ubuntu is used primarily as a development platform by many.
