i made a workaround for myself with a maze of scripts that means the firefox profile resides entirely in a tmpfs mount, symlinked from my ~/.mozilla/firefox. It works, and i only lose data if i shutdown or crash between cron-rsyncs of that profile back to the drive, but it's pretty unsatisfactory really - only rather more satisfactory than the default behaviour.
