This isn't a bug, this is the way Firefox (and Mozilla) have always worked. I find it rather convenient. Maybe this behavior could be enhanced by screening the clipboard for URL content before loading a new location?

Recent revisions have shipped with middlemouse.contentLoadURL turned off, and I've had to hunt through menus to figure out how to turn it back on.
