It turns out my system had hardware rendering disabled (due to the massive screen resolution that went beyond what was allowed for DRI to work ... intel 945GM chipset). Once I got hardware rendering back, the repos version works fine. For some reason, I can't run the download version but since the repos version works fine, I'm not too fussed :)
