Yeah, same problem for me. The downloaded version runs perfectly, but the version I got from Synaptic runs painfully slow, and doesn't even play many of the tracks correctly.

Any chance the version in the package manager can be updated? This is a great game, and "just install it from the website" isn't really a satisfactory answer. If the version in the package manager doesn't work, it should either be updated or removed.
