The issue only appears to affect gdebi-gtk. The CLI install works fine, e.g.

me@my-laptop:~$ cd Downloads/
me@my-laptop:~/Downloads$ sudo gdebi google-chrome-unstable_current_i386.deb

Chrome installs successfully.
