I have this issue on JJ as well, running in a VMWare session. I have Erik's same issue, wherin immediately upon the login screen appearing, the OS will completely hang. Startx works fine. I get the same issue if I run gdm via command line. On 2 occasions it has just simply worked (one normal boot and one command-line typed gdm), but then it stops working the next reboot.
