From what I've read, ASLA will read this file (./asoundrc) for commands. I did not have this on my fresh install of Ubuntu 7.04 64bit edition for my soundblaster audigy. Reading up, I created the file in order to get my 4.1 speakers to work. However, the file did not do so and running any media player still produced only front speakers. I removed the file on a hunch and sound was restored in youtube.
