I suspect that this latest chapter in the problem may be 'pilot error' as I am not a Linux expert. Could somebody please tell me where I am making an incorrect command?

I launched gconf and went to the Gnome Power Monitor.
The box to display an icon on the desktop was not ticked so I ticked it. All other boxes were already ticked in this section.
From a root terminal screen I entered the command 'gnome-power-manager'

And nothing happened. Nothing came back on the terminal screen, it just returned me to the next line, and there is no icon yet for the Gnome Power Manager.

The original problem with the Battery Status Monitor is of course still remaining.
