Maybe that's why I'm not having a problem any more?
(for context, see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-keyring/+bug/328127/comments/23 where I mention that setting of SSH_AUTH_SOCK=0 eliminates the error for me)
