Just to add to this, it appears that this only occurs if you do not have a password initially set for gnome-keyring.
I ran /usr/lib/gnome-keyring/gnome-keyring-ask -d from a terminal. Set my password and attempted to connect to a network using nm-applet. No problems this time.
