I have a solution for Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) Gnome quit hanging with or without
"gnome-power-manager". The "gnome-power-manager_2.20.0-0ubuntu6_amd64.deb"
packaged which is installed as default is broken.
To fix just install the "gnome-power-manager" from Ubuntu 7.04 (feisty) and two required
dependencies. Ubuntu is good as it makes a release every six months I can always roll
back to old version of packages. I have use similar workarounds in Ubuntu by rolling
back selected packages.

This is the last show stopper which prevented me from re-labelling my Ubuntu 7.10
partition as "stable" rather than "testing".
