So in both the working and non-working case, the kernel has no control over the backlight. I guess you have some sort of hardware difference then, mad_man.
Could someone for whom it /does not/ work (not you mad_man), please run "apport-collect 363326" to attach debugging information to this bug. (Give it "Change Non-Private Data" permissions if it asks.) Thank you!
