Noticed timeout was at =30 and changed it to =5

made no difference

:~# cd /boot/grub
:/boot/grub# nano grub.cfg
:/boot/grub#
:/boot/grub# sudo update-grub
Generating grub configuration file ...
Warning: Setting GRUB_TIMEOUT to a non-zero value when GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT is set is no longer supported.

I will probably wipe this and do a clean reinstall grr
