I have Adaptec SCSI controller too on my old Dell PowerEdge 1550 server and the same problem with booting Intrepid. But it's Adaptec AIC-7899P U160/m (rev 01).

rootdelay=90 workaround works for me, although I don't need to wait 90 seconds. About 20-30 seconds is enough.
