On my system the big difference is if I am using an fqdn or a plain IP address. ftp://myserver.mydomain.here works fine (I get the dialog and can log on) ftp://192.168.1.8 opens the dialog as well, but I am not getting in.
I checked the logs on the server (vsftpd): It actually logs in, but konqueror seems not to recognize that the login has happened. BTW: FTP console logins from the client machine are working well.
I have not tried with SMB so far.
