I just came across this thread and would like to add my own information in case that's helpful.

I just installed kubuntu 6.10 on a very old IBM Thinkpad laptop, with a Celeron running at 400 MHz. It has 256 MB RAM (which maxes out the motherboard, to give you an idea how old this is). Upon booting up, it is not using swap, but it's close. I am successfully connected to the internet using a PCMCIA card. The laptop doesn't have an ethernet card. I'm not sure what chipset or driver is using, but it's native, not through ndiswrapper. (The words "PRISM" and "INTERSIL" ring bells from an OpenSUSE install on another laptop, but I don't know how to look this up in kubuntu to see exactly how this is handled with this laptop.)

I get this error message immediately after login, every time I log in. I am unable to show icons on my desktop. When I first installed, there were no files in /Desktop. I created a in /Desktop, a corresponding icon showed up, but on subsequent login's it did not show up.

I hope some of this information is helpful!
