I have the same problem with my ACER ASPIRE 8920G.
I did everything : installation linux-backport-modules, changes in alsa files....reboot, but same problem : no sound at all : on headphones nor on speakers.....nothing at all ! ;-(
I am on Hardy 8.04 beta with x64.
Here are some data who can be useful for you to solve this bug (concerning essentially Acer laptop it sounds, according to what i saw before...) :
