Coming back to this report here: as expected but now confirmed: when I boot the old kernel everything is working normally.

So the cause is *confirmed* to be the different/upgraded kernel that was installed without my request (as described in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-signed-nvidia-5.19/+bug/2025538 )
