I too had this same problem.
Upon Log Out / Switch User (hybernation/suspend not tested), screen would go black and graphics would not come back. Only way out of it was manual shutdown.

I have a 200m:
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON XPRESS Series
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6334 (8.34.8)

kernel: 2.6.20-16-generic

I fixed this bug by setting AlwaysRestartServer=true on **both** of:

factory-gdm.conf
gdm.conf
