I have had the same problem for a long time: every 10th switch crashed the system.
Crashes How badly ? blank screen + Numlock does not change the light on the keyboard (i.e. complete system stuck).
On Hardy Heron 8.04: it does this now most of the time. Hardy is the worst Ubumtu release I've seen so far.

My sysytem: Compaq dualcore, 2Gb memory with ATI card, using proprietary driver. (I don't see a tool anymore under system/administration with which I can provide more information)
