I have the exact same problem with lockups during installation of Edgy i386 on a HP Pavilion AMD64 PC.

The computer has an Amethyst motherboard and Phoenix
BIOS, so the problem is not restricted to ASUS motherboards.

I previously had to install dapper with -nodma, to avoid
lockups when mounting CD-ROMs.
