i'm also having this problem, just download the CD install, installed in a new computer (without anything) and starting up i get no gnome... loading kde (kubuntu) it starts fine

i have sound using using aplay, for exemple: aplay /usr/share/sounds/pop.wav

i also ear sound in the login screen (gdm), so i dont think that my problem is sound related...

using ps xa i see a zombie xrdb, dont know if its related with the problem
