Same here on a Dell Latitude D420.

My kern.log is very short though:
Oct 25 19:08:18 ixion kernel: [17179993.756000] video bus notify
Oct 25 19:08:19 ixion kernel: [17179994.808000] video bus notify

.. and that's it. I hardkill it with the power switch here, because it's my only way of regaining control afaik.
