You are correct that the logs would not be available. However, reading https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend it seems that removing kernel modules can help one resume properly. Based off your previous investigations, if the system does not resume from suspend, try removing the ohci1394 driver before suspending and see if it will resume after that.
