Perhaps you are running into the udf permission issue ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/10550 )

What happens if you put "totem %m" in the Video DVD Disks section of System → Preferences → Removable Drives and Media → Multimedia?

If that gives a permission error, try it with "gksudo totem %m¨.
