I have this problem too with these devices:

iPod Nano
Wester Digital 500gb MyBook USB Hard Drive

Here is the output from the commands requested earlier, but specific to my case:

mike@bistromath:~$ uname -a
Linux bistromath 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 21:45:15 GMT 2007 x86_64 GNU/Linux
