I am having the same issue. I am attaching lshw/lsmod/dmesg reports.
The lshw is from edgy.
This is a Dell Precision 670 with a defaulted bios (Rev A07) and hyperthreading turned on. No SATA raid enabled in bios.
For some reason it is trying to probe each SATA port as PATA with a master and slave. Its detecting the seagate drives as master but failing imediately detecting a slave.
I am guessing ata_generic is preempting ata_piix on this machine. I will attempt to boot with SATA raid enabled in bios and see how a the SATA bios reports drives.
