My laptop Ubuntu 7.10 computer MD97600 shows similar symptoms as that of Scott Hilleard:
Gnome main menu > Quit > Hibernate creates a black screen with a dialog where I could remove password barring. Entering my user password removes the barring and restores the Ubuntu screen without LAN access. A tooltip appears: "Problem with the Suspend mode. The change to Hibernation failed..." In /var/log/syslog I find a line; "gnome-power-manager: (detlef) hibernate failed." In Feisty s2disk worked all right though.
