I just installed Hardy Alpha 1, the latest updates and linux-image-2.6.24-1-generic.
The problem seems to have disappeared with Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00
Here is the relevant log messages :

No more spurious completions !

I will confirm this later after more testing.
