This problem keeps happening for me every now and then (almost every single reboot actually). I just noticed some strange though... while I cannot move the mouse cursor the mouse buttons are still working though. If I press the right-button I see the GNOME context menu etc... still I cannot move the cursor with the USB mouse (albeit it works to move the cursor with the touchpad).
