One thing to check when running the newer Hardy release is that all sound levels are unmuted and turned up. Hardy has ALSA version 1.0.16 which mutes some sound levels by default. If the issue still persists, care to run the alsa-info.sh script described in the "Automatic Sound Information Collection" section of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems and attach the output to this bug report? Also note that we'll keep this open against the actively developed kernel bug against 2.6.22 this will be closed. Thanks.
