This works around the issue for me:
echo "options i915 powersave=0" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/i915

This bug could be related:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/492392

However, running the latest lucid kernel so this may be a separate issue.
