I tried running kpartx -v -a /dev/sda on Mandriva Cooker and get similar messages, e.g. this tail:
device-mapper: table: 252:0: linear: dm-linear: Device lookup failed
device-mapper: ioctl: error adding target to table
device-mapper: reload ioctl failed: Invalid argument
add map sda23: 0 9831717 linear 0:0 302728923
