I got it working in Arch without downgrading the kernel it may work for Ubuntu as well.
Edit the grub file and comment the following entry;
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
Then rebuild the grub

sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Reboot and enjoy
I was going to settle for running lts but this works for my setup no issues at all.
