Ok. I was finally able to resolve this problem to some extent.
Cleaned up dmesg greatly by adding "lapic" to the kernel line in kernels 2.6.22-14 and 2.6.24-12.
Also changed a config setting for cpu to "custom" in the system bios.
Finally ran "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.
An xorg.conf file was written to /etc/x11 where previously there had been none...only something in /usr/share/xresprobe....I believe.
Anyway dmeg looks much better. Synaptics touchpad is finally scrolling and 2.6.22-14-generic seems good. Still no sound in kernel 2.6.24-12.
