USB devices work, but constant syslog errors "unable to enumerate USB device on port 5"

This error was introduced in Intrepid.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I disagree that the message is harmless.

I see a distinct drop in response to my USB keyboard on the machine running Intrepid v.s. a nearly identical machine running Hardy. There are other processes affected as well, that's just the most obvious. The process generating the message is running in a tight unending loop. This never a good thing for an operating system routine to do without purpose.

Using Intrepid livecd x86_64, I get the attached message during bootup.

I am getting the same errors as reh4c on ubuntu x86_64 /Intrepid. If it helps, the error didnot appear after installing from livecd. However, after upgrading to latest packages, the error started appearing.

I get a similar error and if I restart my computer a couple times, it gets through the error message and actually boots properly thereafter.

I don't have the same problem with ubuntu 7.10, but get it starting from 8.04 version.

I read someone says to stop the sata drivers, but i have my hard disk, cd/dvd reader and the bluray reader plugged with sata connectin.....so..............

Just did a live boot of Intrepid 8.10 RC and did not see the enumerate error. About 2 weeks ago, I swapped out my RAM based on strange errors during the installation process (for both Mandriva and Ubuntu testing). Other errors have ceased after swapping RAM...could the USB enumeration error have been solved by swapping RAM sticks as well??? If so, then my bug comments may be invalid.

Hi, I use Intrepid Ibex with all the latest updates. After the public release, I updated (safe-upgraded) the linux-image, and found this error messages and none of my usb ports work. This has happened to my laptop and desktop as well.

I updated to latest kernel in proposed repository, and now I have this problem too. The touchpad in my laptop worked after I loaded the usbmouse module into the kernel.

Same problems here, after trying to install a complete fresh ubuntu.

This issue occours on Intrepid, but hence also on Hardy.
So i was not able to install any version with success.

After the latest apparmor update, it is working for me again.

The above solution did not work for me! I took my laptop to the service center and I was told that the USB ports are not receiving enough power. They (the USB ports) are supposed to be getting 5mA, but they were only getting 2mA. A lsusb -v showed they are getting only 0mA !!!

I don't know if this is related, but today i've decided to test Kubuntu 9.04 latest alpha and i have a flood of this without stop:

When I was connecting in the past my camera in one of my usb ports, camera wasn't mounted and the keyboard stopped to work until I was disconnecting the camera. In another usb port I didn't have any problem until now. Now neither this port is working with my camera or a usb hard drive I have. It works with a usb flash drive.

Card-Reader and ext. Drive (WD Book) works fine on USB.

I unplugged the USB card reader, and the USB external micro hard disk
(devices 4 and 6) and the error messages went away. I should try connecting

To add information to the bug, one of the devices that doesn't get
recognized on boot (inifinite console messages) is a Maxtor USB2 DVD 16X R/W
unit. The device does get recognized and is usable from gnomebake, brasero,
and rythmbox after boot, but I especulate that the crashes I've seen on
those are due to the USB problen. I don't think that the model number for
the DVD unit will help, but I can provide it. The device is connected to one
of the USB ports of the motherboard, but I have a six-port DLink USB hub
taking care of other devices.

being spammed to the console every second. The console (CTRL-ALT-F1 etc) is completely useless because of this error message coming every second. It happens whether or not I have anything connected to the usb ports. All devices are working fine. The only problem is that this message is spamming the console which (1) makes the console useless (2) makes the boot process look like crap.

Why is this message repeated a zillion times?? Why doesn't it go to a logfile instead of being splurted to the console??

I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 from scratch on new partition one week ago and everything worked well for 5 days.
After that, I started to get the "hub 1-0:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 3" loop and the system stopped recognizing my Iomega External HD (which worked perfectly before !!)

'guess nobody has any clue , right?

I'm only commenting on this post for those guys at the end of their pitiful ropes.
My Sony Vaio was effected by this after an upgrade to 2.6.31-14-generic and I tried every suggestion from this site and ubuntuforums, long story short, the ultimate fix was to unplug my machine, remove the battery and go play guitar for 30 minutes. So, just in case you aren't doing that because you think that can't possibly be the problem (like I did), do it anyway. You may save yourself some time.

This bug is not a duplicate of #54273. That bug is "only one USB device works, all others don't. The error reported to dmesg is 'device not accepting address 79, error -110'" This bug is "All USB devices work, however the message 'unable to enumerate USB device on port 5' is repeated to syslog every second."

Please update this bug report accordingly, and future people who add comments, please keep your comments on target (do not use this thread to report non-functioning USB devices).

This is not a trivial bug, because, as has been previously mentioned, it makes the syslog useless for all reasonable purposes. You cannot "tail -f" watch it for output when troubleshooting other issues, and you have to manually parse the garbage results out when submitting information for other issues.

I am using 2.6.31-15-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP (Mythbuntu 9.10) and am experiencing the same issue. All my USB devices work, but the message "unable to enumerate USB device on port 5" is written to syslog once a second.

Isn't there even a workaround available?

For reference, you can still do:

# tail -f /var/log/syslog | grep -v "unable to enumerate"

That certainly doesn't mean it's not very annoying though: that trick does not apply to consoles, so consoles are essentially impossible to use as anything interesting gets overwritten by once a second USB errors.

I have not found one other than unloading the module (prior to Ubuntu Karmic) or disabling the device through /proc (since the support seems to be built in in Karmic). This is not satisfactory, since the side-effect is disabling the device itself.

I read the entire thread here and i don't think it's gonna be fixed. I get it everytime i insert my mp3 player. And i've gone through kernels and i've always updated my system as it should.

Also, it's not harmless, the device cannot be mounted and i cannot use it until i just plug it in and disconnect every other usb device from my machine.

Does anybody have the fix for this?

I have similar bug, but the device (icy box multi card reader) doesn't work since 8.10 It worked flawlessly before and also works with all windows versions.

I too had this issue on 10.04.
The wireless card was the one causing the problem as it was disabled on start-up. Using driver rt73usb for a Point of View Mobii ION mini notebook.

I rebooted several times and with different kernels. Both 2.6.32-21 and 2.6.32-22 provided the same error.

I ended up removing the battery and AC adapter for a few minutes and all went back to normal... I hope it never come back though.

Interesting. I don't have NTFS, FAT, or VFAT drives hooked to my box. Wondering how I can tell what's being referred to being on port <#>. I had many devices attached to USB ports, so I'll try to isolate the issue by unplugging and checking the drive to see if I can narrow it down.

I can confirm this problem occurred today after an upgrade to 2.6.35-23 from 2.6.35-22. My USB mouse stopped working, changed it for two alternative mice, both failed to work. Some ports detected the mouse, others didn't.

lsusb fails to print out anything (hangs) if I connect any of the before mentioned USB mice.

Resolved by switching back to -22-generic. Is there something wrong with USB drivers in -23-generic?

Add to previous comment to clarify: Some ports detected the mouse (and turned it on, visibly by powering on the LED), others didn't, but the mouse didn't work on any port (failing with unable to enumerate USB). Perhaps it is important to state that Logitech Mouse failed once and stopped reconnecting to the system, while Razer BoomSlang gaming mouse kept cycling and failing with a different error.

I think I was able to solve mine strangely enough, or it was just a coincidence.

In terminal:

I've had this issue with various USB devices for years.

Here's one example that used to work on older hardware with Ubuntu installs, but generally not with newer.

I have a SanDisk Sanza Clip mp3 player that I used to use with Rythmbox all the time, but like I said, doesn't work with most of my newer pc's. I think in some cases I was able to disable the ehci module, but I don't have that option anymore with the newer versions of Ubuntu.

I followed some instructions I found in a forum and tried to:
echo -n "0000:00:1d.0" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd/unbind
but all I managed to do was disable my mouse and keyboard (that was fun :P )

I'm finding the same happening on Ubuntu 10.10

Just upgraded to 10.10 (Server) from older Debian [don't ask!], started getting this problem. Be warned, if you haven't done much research on this problem yet, you will find the gamut of remedies described on the net.

For me, what worked was a BIOS update. Board: Tyan Tomcat K8E (S2865 AG2NRF). It's been in place for years working with original BIOS (1.01). Flashed to "current" 2006-11-15 (v 3.04). There's a BIOS setting in there for Operating System, choices are "Other" and "Linux".

Problem solved. Hope yours goes as well!

The same happened to me with Debian Lenny, and now with Ubuntu lucid. With debian I ended up disabling ehci_hcd driver, and consecuently, having low speed on USB ports. With previous versions of Debian it didn't happened, and with versions of Ubuntu prior to 2007. I think it is a kernel problem with that module (ehci_hcd).

I have found that when I disconnect a cable that goes from the mainboard to a flash card reader (the yellow one, because there is a green one that goes to the car reader that doesn't need to be disconnected), the message dissapears.
It dessapears too if I disable echi for the device. I do the following (as root):

I haven't seen this issue show up in 10.10. I did remove a device (Memorex
USB DVD writer) that died. Even if the device had a slow death, it should
not lead to the kernel becoming crazy about it.

I suspected it might be something to do with my card reader, since I didn't have any obvious usb device connected. I'll have to investigate at some point

In any case, is there SOME WAY to disable this message?!?!?!? I can not use ANY of the terminals, I jump from one to another and the messages follow which ever terminal I use. This is more than just inconvenient, I can't update my video driver because of it. :(((

You can disable the messages by appending 'nousb' to your kernel parameters. This will of course also disable your usb hardware though.

i remembered i tried the last or one of the last kernel versions (2.6.35.????) for ubuntu 10.10 on an 11.04 upgrade, and these messages didnt appear after grub boot (removed 'quiet splash' from grub to see)

however there were some errors on starting some default applications. and a bit of a slow startup.

so now i've updated the bios and did a clean ubuntu reinstall, but to no avail. faster startup but error message still appears. Trying both the amd64 standard and alternate installers. I might try the i386 32 bit one next. but since this is 64 bit capable system with 4gb of mem, the 64 bit one seems the better choice.

aside from error messages things seem to work normally.

also to note that alternate install seems to get some updates from internet during installation. so am not sure if default install of ubuntu without internet would produce the error.

also saw this error on a recent Clonezilla on the same computer, rendering clonezilla unusable. but using an older i386 (or ?686) CD works without the error.

1.) the unbind commands mentioned above for ls /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd
the devices disappeared from ls /sys/bus/pci/drivers/ehci_hcd, but the error messages still appear on kern.log.
2.) unplugging the laptop and removing the battery as mentioned in forums, to no avail.
3.) also tried update-usbids at terminal (error still goes on and on)

others can try these though, in case their error message is caused by something else

(also upgraded bios to latest from HP site released this year to no avail)

so next step for me is to install all updates for this amd64 installation, see if fixed.

if not try out the unplugging method again.

then if not try installing the 32 bit ubuntu 11.04 desktop.

Well looks like nobody's assigned to this bug. Still, it is confirmed.

So a workaround worked:

at first simply unbinding ehci entries worked inconsistently, but also unbinding ohci entries did the trick.

adding the following to /etc/rc.local worked for me:

is there a way to unbind sooner and then rebind right before the desktop screen? Kindly provide complete instructions if you can, thanks.

(the error still appears right after SATA scsi Hard drive configuration and after the usb mouse is detected. Then disappears when the unbinding script kicks in.
That's why there is a need to unbind sooner, or maybe put off original initial binding to a later time)
Will probably look into this when i have some more time. put in considerable hours already into this one.

guess kernel can be modified. But dont know how to do that, yet.

I'm not completely sure this is the exact issue I have, however when I look at syslog (that's what you can see at [ctrl]+[alt]+[F7], right?*) I have new "unable to enumerate USB device on port 6" appearing every half second or so, after having my computer asleep.
It only happens every now and then, however I think that it's related to USB-devices being connected when the sleep is initiated, as it usually seems related to my webcam, which is USB-connected, but cannot be detached since it is kinda built into my laptop.

I have found two ways to stop this. The one can be found at http://www.absolutelytech.com/2010/04/18/solved-unable-to-enumerate-usb-device-disabling-ehci_hcd/, the other is to simple open Cheese (the webcam program), force quit it when it turns grey, and then when my webcam indicator blinks it works. The last one however, I only tried once so far, but will retry again when i have the chance.

Now, is there any further info I can provide to resolve this?

You see: I unbind and then bind the ehci entries again. If I don't bind the entry again, one of the message keeps spaming the console. Binding again let vanish the messages.

Compared to J B's suggestions I had not to touch the ohci entries.

on each. The other command didn't work for me either.

My problem (#84), that was "patched" with #85, is caused by USB 2.0 ¿driver?

Mine is an Intel 82801I (ICH9 Family) laptop chipset.

I've pretty much given up getting usb to work on this laptop. If I unbind the driver from one port then the issue comes back a little later on a different one. I keep meaning to boot it into Windows to confirm that it is in fact a hardware error and will follow up here if I ever do. To avoid spamming the console I just boot with the nousb kernel option.

Mine is Intel 82801H (ICH8 Family).
No nVidia hardware.
USB works, but I have seen this issue a few times.

This bug was filed against a series that is no longer supported and so is being marked as Won't Fix. If this issue still exists in a supported series, please file a new bug.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

This should be Confirmed. People are saying it's present on 11.04 which is certainly still supported. Someone with access please update.

update on this is that bluetooth actually stopped working on the laptop the unbind fix was applied on.
so it was not a real fix if i wanted to use bluetooth.

bluetooth works on windows.

other info which might be related:
- for this laptop, bluetooth is also disabled in ubuntu if it was switched off in windows. this was already discussed in http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8720388&postcount=5

anyway,
gave up on it and just mainly use windows on that laptop now after the ubuntu partition stopped working even after reformat/reinstall. failed most probably due to overheating issues (separate laptop issue). unable to enumerate error looks disruptive to the installation as well.

the laptop's days are numbered. unless a hardware fix is applied. probably later.

been happening since three days ago: "unable to enumerate device on usb port 5"

The message "[ **** ] hub 1-1:1.0: unable to enumerate USB device on port 6" shows up in syslog about 3 times / second. Usb devices seem to work normally. I have seen this happening in 11.04 and now on 11.10.

The bug makes login shell (Ctrl + Alt + F1) unusable as the error messages are printed on the screen.

I'll provide more information if needed.

no more 'unable to enumerate device' errors for me, when using xubuntu 11.10 on the same hardware.

I also have this error. All my USB devices seem to work. Like lekksi says this error makes tty1 completly unusable! Plz fix.

on xubuntu oneiric 11.10, bug is back.
on tty, about 2 times each second:

noticed it after installation of pulseaudio-module-bluetooth.
not sure if that's the cause though. or if it's from updates.

all usb devices are working including webcam and bluetooth playback and input

sometimes there is no error at all when the computer is newly booted up.

The kern.log has this line:

I have an issue with the system being able to see a USB drive. I know the port works because I can plug in a wireless mouse receiver to my USB port.
