Confirming this bug. Setting as high importance since it has a severe impact on a small (estimated) portion of Ubuntu users.
At about the same time as the bug reporter, I got this kernel panic on Ubuntu Intrepid 64-bit. However, I can successfully boot into my system if I reset the computer one or two times.
Though I never experienced this problem on Ubuntu 8.04, the bug for which the reporter was referring to is Bug #196046.
I'm going to try setting the default Grub settings to an older kernel and see what happens.
