Have the same symptom (freeze after selecting kernel). I have:

Kernel 3.0.0.15.17
INTEL Prescott Pentium 4 P4 3.4GHZ SL7E6 478/800MHZ/1M
Intel D865GLC Micro ATX Socket 478 865G Motherboard

Kernel 2.6.38 and below work fine.
