It was them,

I downgraded the packages to _7.0.3~rc2-1ubuntu3_, doing which compiz starts to work again.

libgl1-mesa-dri (7.1~rc1-0ubuntu1) to 7.0.3~rc2-1ubuntu3_i386
libgl1-mesa-glx (7.1~rc1-0ubuntu1) to 7.0.3~rc2-1ubuntu3_i386
libglu1-mesa ( 7.1~rc1-0ubuntu1) to 7.0.3~rc2-1ubuntu3_i386
mesa-utils ( 7.1~rc1-0ubuntu1) to 7.0.3~rc2-1ubuntu3_i386

Hence, the problem lies with mesa packages, "7.1~rc1-0ubuntu1".
Lets wait for a newer version, and hope that fixes the fragile situation :) I have locked the version for now.
