IMHO, the ideal behaviour is that the file would open in the helper application as a new file: allowing edits *and* displaying a "save as..." window on save. As simple as this.
Openoffice allows this. Extract from the manpage
---------
-n filename Creates a new document using filename as a template.
---------
So, why not configure Tunderbird, Firefox and other internet software so that helper apps open in "new file" mode when possible ? Files would still be saved read-only to /tmp in any case.
Rising this bug from the deads ;)
