Right! I was taking the advice from
http://ilias.ca/blog/2005/10/limiting-the-attachment-window-size-in-thunderbird/
and added:

   #attachmentList {max-height: 4em !important;}

to the userChrome.css file. After removing this line it works fine. Thanks!
