I'm changing the status of this bug back to New because it still effects Ubuntu 8.04 and I've located the cause.
The problem is not wrong display of video but wrong timing of audio. Mplayer's libmad support is *known broken*. libmad fails to keep correct time under mplayer when playing video with VBR MP3 audio. See http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/mplayer-dev-eng/2008-January/055849.html for more details.
This is a bug with Ubuntu's mplayer package as mplayer does not default to libmad for decoding! Mplayer upstream defaults to mp3lib, which does not exhibit this problem.
