After upgrading to 12.04 I am now stuck with low (1024x768) resolution on a 1600x1200 monitor. Would love to fix this by installing nvidia-96, but have the problem identified in this bug. For some reason I can't coax xrandr or xorg.conf to do the right thing otherwise.
